Why is having an eye exam with an OCT eye scan so important?

Whether you’re going about your everyday routine or cherishing a special moment, healthy vision makes all the difference. To ensure you can enjoy clear eyesight for years to come, it’s important to keep up with your regular eye exams – available at Webb, Lucas & Stubbs Optometrists, your opticians in Stafford.

Children should have an eye exam every year, while most adults should have eye exams every two years. If you’re aged over 40 and have a family history of glaucoma, aged over 70 or have a condition like glaucoma or diabetes, our optometrist may recommend eye exams more frequently.

Your advanced eye test in Stafford

This advanced scan is part of our advanced eye exam that allows our experienced optometrists to see what’s going on beneath the surface of your eye in greater detail for extra peace of mind. It captures high-resolution images of the different layers of the light-sensitive tissue at the back of your eye where your retina is.

Why have an OCT eye scan?

The detail captured using 3D OCT scans allows us to detect the earliest signs of eye disease and pinpoint exactly where they are, so you can get appropriate treatment as soon as possible to protect your vision.

OCT scans are especially helpful for the early detection of the sight-threatening eye disease, glaucoma, which shows few symptoms until it is advanced, as well as age-related macular degeneration, retinal detachments, and diabetic retinopathy.
If you have a family history of glaucoma, have diabetes, or simply want to know more about your visual health, a 3D OCT scan can help significantly. These scans are completely painless, non-invasive, quick, and also suitable for children.

What happens during an OCT scan?

During your scan, which will take place before your main eye exam, you will sit in front of the machine, with your head placed on a chin rest. You will be asked to focus on a blue cross and then the camera will do the rest. This non-invasive scan only takes a few moments.
The images are then amalgamated to form one comprehensive 3D image which is instantly available to analyse and discuss with you. The results can also be kept in your patient record, so that your optometrist can continue to track any changes from previous OCT scans and compare results every time you come in.
