The effects of UV exposure on the eyes

Sunny days are well and truly here. While most of us know that the sun damages our skin, did you know it can also damage your eyes?

How does UV damage the eyes?

Ultraviolet (UV) light is a form of radiation emitted by the sun. The two types that harm your eyes and skin are UVA and UVB.
UVA causes irreversible damage to the macula (the central part of your retina) at the back of your eye and continued exposure over the years can increase your risk of cataracts and macular degeneration.
UVB damages your cornea on the front surface of your eye and can cause photokeratitis, which is a temporary, painful sunburn of the eyes, as well as increasing your risk of developing eyelid cancer and skin cancer around your eyes.
As children have larger pupils and clearer natural lenses, more UV can enter their eyes, putting them at greater risk of UV damage. It is important to start protecting children’s eyes as soon as possible, as this accumulates over time.

100% UV protection sunglasses

When purchased from a reputable optician, sunglasses can provide 100% UV protection. Here at our independent opticians in Stafford, we have a wide range of 100% UV protection sunglasses in a variety of styles to cater for all face shapes and preferences.
We recommend wraparound styles as they provide complete coverage of your eyes to prevent light coming in from most angles. It’s also a good idea to wear a hat that shades your eyes and sunscreen to protect the delicate skin around your eyes. UV rays can penetrate your eyes even on bright, overcast days, so it’s important to wear your sunglasses in these conditions too.
