Low Vision Resources Day

In August 2024 we held our inaugural Low Vision Resources Day.

The loss of local resources for patients with sight problems due to constraints on social care and voluntary services has left many people with challenges when trying to access the support they need.

We aimed to provide a service to our patients and the local community by using the practice to exhibit and demonstrate some of the latest technological equipment designed to provide magnification and contrast enhancement, as well as converting text to speech.

We offered the experience of our Optometrists Emily and Richard who have both worked as clinical leads at the Wolverhampton Eye Infirmary where they have provided low-vision services and support to patients with sight loss. Emily and Richard can provide in-depth low vision assessments to prescribe optimal visual enhancement magnifiers and to signpost to local and national support agencies.

The day was well attended and a great success, we were supported by Ed Teall from Optelec who was on site to demonstrate a range of electronic magnifiers as well as the Orcam which is an innovative device that reads printed text aloud to the user. Ed’s experience and enthusiasm were well received by patients who attended, and he was kind enough to offer training and support to those who had already acquired advanced equipment but needed a bit more help to make the most of the devices they had.

At Webb, Lucas & Stubbs we continue to offer low vision services throughout the year and offer a wide range of high-quality optical magnifying glasses and digital magnifiers from Eschenbach as well as Cocoon sunshades to improve visual comfort and reduce glare. We plan to run the Low Vision Resources Day annually to continue to provide the best support to our patients.
